Front Perennial Garden

It’s amazing at how much growth has occurred in the last couple weeks. I stained the fencing prior to the plants waking from dormancy so I had some room to work with. I’m very happy with how these second year plants have turned out. These were all planted from seed in last years garden and not all of them produced even the slightest bloom. Now it looks like everything is going to bloom. This is showing the before and after when I was staining the fencing and then just this week after adding 2 new bags of fresh gravel to the area. This is a photograph of the queen salvia that is just in front of the brown flower pot.

Lettuce Transplants

I planted all my leafy greens and lettuces yesterday in the evening. All together there are 42 plants, some of which are kale. I also planted 6 brussel sprouts. This is my first time growing lettuce and I’m excited because we eat so much of it. This morning I checked on them and they seem to be doing very well still considering it’s been so windy. I put together a cover with some cheesecloth to protect them from the strong sun since they are just trying to get acclimated to their new home outdoors.  Today I spent a majority of my day staining more of the fence and tomorrow I plan on working some compost into some of the beds and set up some irrigation in the front section of the garden.

Getting Closer

For the past several months I have been taking care of all these seedling in my tiny apartment just off of my kitchen and today I noticed that there has been an explosion in their growth and it’s so exciting. They will be ready in a couple of weeks to be planted out, but for now they are still hanging out on these shelves in my kitchen. Soon there will be no more tripping over packets of seeds and bags of dirt and I will have this space back to use for other things. But more importantly the garden will finally start coming to life.

This afternoon I spent a few hours working some compost into the top several inches of the garden boxes and watered them in a bit. Again I did a walk around the yard checking out the plants that made it over the winter and I feel so very grateful that so many of them will not need to be replaced. I tried to stick with perennials that I knew would do well in zone 6b that I am in. Several of my favorites are unfortunately annuals and will need to be replanted. Tomorrow I will continue to work outside, it should be nice around 57 for high.

Potato and Onion Planting

Over the years of gardening I have always been curious about other crops that I could grow. I typically tend to stick with the easier famili...
